Venus Retrograde in Scorpio

On the new moon of September 10 at 18 Virgo, Venus entered Scorpio and mercury entered Libra. Right now, in late September we are enjoying the harmonious vibes of Libra, the softening effect of mars in Cancer and the optimism of Jupiter in Leo. This is only the beginning of Venus’ story, which will not end until January 7, 2027. The full moon on September 26 at 3 Aries is exactly conjunct Neptune and sextile Pluto. The stage is set for drama, intrigue, passion and scandal. The shrouded mysteries of Neptune will be illuminated, while Pluto digs deep. Sherlock and Watson are on the case. Venus in Scorpio plunges us into the deep emotional waters of the Pluto underworld. Mars rules Scorpio – this is motivation, libido, sometimes conflict in sex and power, jealousy, obsession, shared resources, intimacy, emotional attachment. Pluto squaring Venus must have true, vulnerable honesty or bust. The tough conversations need to start now. In the coming weeks, old worn out beliefs, behaviors and patterns will emerge for healing. Neptune being given the limelight can dissolve illusions, enhance intuition, but also disseminate confusion and deception. In the broader scope Venus retrograde in Scorpio suggests backroom deals, hidden sums of money and valuable assets held behind the scenes.

Full moon in Aries is an aha moment for the individual. How do you feel? What is the emotional impact of secrets revealed or seeing the truth from a different angle? The Sun in Libra is supported by the Super Galactic Center. The early degrees of Libra imbue unconditional love and the realization that true love is eternal and bountiful. There is no need to seek it out there when it comes from in here. This is an opportunity. The moon in Aries has Neptune on one side and Saturn on the other. – an Aries sandwich The moon is what you want, how you feel. In Aries, she says I want to clarify my identity and update my boundaries. The Sun in Libra is that other light – the reflection. Sun in Libra is love, balance, harmony, peace, justice.

Venus is moving very slowly and comes to a standstill on October 3rd. In a previous article, I have talked about the mechanics of Venus Retrograde. Her orbit of the Sun takes 584 days. She has a very regular pattern, in that she traces out a 5-point star in the zodiac, which repeats more or less every 8 years. For close to 100 years now, she has been the Venus Star Point in Scorpio at 8-year intervals. It is interesting to look back to 2018, 2010, 2002, 1994, etc. and notice patterns in society, politics, the arts, the economy and health.  Scorpio’s energy is very intense, dramatic, secretive, sexual, powerful and transformative. The focus might have been death, legacy, investment, sex life or the occult.

If venus in your chart is ahead of the sun, you have venus as a morning star. If she is behind the sun, then you were born when she was an evening star. Venus is always close to the sun, so we mostly get to see her rising or setting. For example, if you are a Libra, with sun at 10 degrees Libra and your venus is in Virgo, then she is a morning star, because Virgo rises before Libra. People with venus morning star are usually more direct, even impulsive in love and relationships, while venus evening star people are more reserved and cautious. For another example, consider if venus was at 2 degrees Libra. This is called “under the beams”, meaning that her qualities are somewhat outshone by the sun. Actually, Venus rules Libra, so there could be some vying for attention between the heart and the ego. Let’s say Venus is at 9 degrees, right next to the sun. This is called “combust” and fuses the energies of the sun and venus together. This would be a very loving, fair, harmonious placement.

Bringing focus back to the present, the Sun is currently transiting the sign of Libra, ruled by Venus. Early autumn is a sweet time of harvest, turning leaves, back to school, equalizing of light and dark. The Sun will be in Libra until October 24, when we move into more darkness, more self-reflective Scorpio.

Venus will be retrograde from October 3rd until November 13th. At that time she will have backed up to Libra 22.

When I learned that there would be a provincial election on October 24th, I just had to look into the charts of BC, David Eby and the current transits. On October 23rd, the sun enters Scorpio. Same day, the moon enters Aries. Also on that day there is a venus cazimi, which means that the sun and venus will be exactly conjunct – the kiss. This might be a very auspicious time to hold an election. It makes me wonder if the NDP has an astrologer. However, the square to Pluto screams scandal, secrets and large sums of money. Venus’ current cycle suggests a reset and a fresh start. However this cazimi is happening while venus is in retrograde, which means the subject is under review, scrutiny and therefore unpredictable. Venus is not strong in Scorpio. Attempts at peacemaking could backfire and cause deeper conflict. Mars rules scorpio and also Aries. The moon in Aries that day is in contact with mars in Leo, adding a measure of competition and pride. The moon is conjunct Saturn, which suggests a poor turnout. But here I have to wonder if it’s intentional. Also in conjunction is Pallas Athene – the goddess of war and strategy.  The chart is set for 8am Oct 24, PDT, when the polls open. The cazimi venus is exactly on the ascendant. If this date was chosen unintentionally, I would think that secrets and scandals will be unleashed on this day. Mars is on the midheaven. This is the ambition, the aspiration – to compete, to vie for leadership. Finally, and no less astonishing, this is the day that mercury goes retrograde, also in scorpio. There could be under-the-table negotiations, pay-offs, whispers. Whatever the outcome, it won’t be clear. In my experience, when I do something important during a mercury retrograde, I usually end up doing it over again.

I don’t have David Eby’s time of birth, but it is interesting to note that his birthday is July 21st, while BC’s birthday is July 20. Both are late Cancer. David has a Taurus moon, which is conjunct Jupiter, which suggests tallness. They are at the very unfortunate degree of 25 taurus. Here lives Algol, one of the most malefic stars recorded. Algol speaks of “losing your head” and other misfortunes. In his case, it might just mean that he stands a head taller than most people. Jupiter’s presence suggests opportunities. His north node is in Scorpio. North node is the soul’s direction – the area in life where the being wishes to explore and learn. Scorpio is not just the underworld. Eby may have interests in metaphysics, but more likely investments and holdings. His natal venus in Leo squaring the nodes brings up issues of self-worth. What struck me most about his chart, and the reason I decided to go into detail, is that he is experiencing his Chiron return. He just turned age 50 and the transit will finalize next spring when Chiron makes a final pass over his natal Chiron in Taurus. I recently wrote about Chiron moving into Taurus. In general, Chiron return is a time in a person’s life when you make a huge change. If you avoid it, quite often the universe will insist. Either a health issue comes up, or some circumstance that changes your life direction. I hope it’s not his health. The next day, October 25th, there is a full moon at 2 Taurus, conjunct his Chiron. Venus is opposing his Chiron. So we have Sun/venus opposing his Chiron with the transiting moon. Moon in Taurus is earthy and physical… right on his Chiron, this is feeling the pain in the body. His natal sun in Cancer forms a Tsquare with this setup – challenging his vitality and raison d’etre. I want to hope that this is merely a life lesson. As I watch him, it seems to me that he is not happy about his current trajectory. He may be trying to please his controllers. It’s a pretty wild chain of events.
