Chiron, the mythological character, was a Centaur, which is a being that has the lower body of a horse and the upper body of a human. Most centaurs in the stories were very raucous and vulgar. However Chiron was a unique, thoughtful being, very different from his mates. He was rejected by his human mother, due to his appearance. The very accomplished and talented Apollo adopted Chiron and taught him many things about herbs, botany, surgery, and homeopathic healing; music and the creative arts; divination and astrology; archery, gymnastics; mathematics, architecture and more. Born as a result of rape and rejected by his mother, Chiron was self-reflective and inquiring about himself and his worthiness. He became a prolific healer, sage, seer and builder. He was well known for his ability to think outside the box and solve difficult problems. Some would call him a maverick. But these skills were born from a wound – a deep sensitivity, highly tuned to others’ reaction to him. This is a level of awareness that can only be reached from experiencing trauma, loss, abuse, victimhood or rejection. Chiron’s story is about using life’s hard knocks as opportunities to learn and grow – essentially turning life’s lemons into lemonade. His legacy is that from that gut-wrenching pain of being rejected by his outer world (his mother) he was able to cut to the chase and look for doors that were open to him. He learned skills and concepts, achieving self-worth and self-esteem through his own efforts.
Chiron went on in life to teach, heal and help many and to demonstrate his physical prowess and brilliance in solving problems. Royal sons and daughters were sent to Chiron, living in his cave beneath Mount Pelion, where he taught them music, archery and medicine. Then one day he was accidentally wounded by a poison arrow. This was the wound that could not be healed. Since he was an immortal, he found himself doomed to an eternity of agonizing pain. Chiron’s friend Prometheus, was an older Titan immortal. Prometheus loved humanity. It is said that he created the first humans out of clay. Zeus was the supreme king of the gods and would not allow humans to have fire, wanting to keep them vulnerable and defenseless. Prometheus defied Zeus, stole fire from Mount Olympus and gave it to humanity so that they could cook, keep warm and forge tools. Zeus punished him by chaining him to a mountain, where eagles fed on his liver daily – another painful conundrum for an immortal.
So Chiron went to Zeus and offered to give up his immortality in exchange for Prometheus’ freedom. Zeus agreed to Chiron’s proposal and Prometheus was freed. Chiron was allowed to die in peace. In honor of his noble sacrifice, Chiron’s soul was placed among the stars, where he became the constellation Sagittarius.
The celestial body known as Chiron was discovered on November 1, 1977. His orbit is erratic, but is mostly confined to the area between Saturn and Uranus. In ancient astrology, Saturn was the outermost visible planet and thus interpreted as the edge, defining limits and parameters. Saturn is Father Time, presenting us with schedules and deadlines. Uranus was not discovered until 1783. His physical attributes are irregular, eccentric and include a multi-pole magnetic field. With the discovery of Uranus came the potential for new ways of thinking, revolution and expanded consciousness. Chiron is sometimes described as the bridge between Saturn (form) and Uranus (Universal mind). “Wounded healer” identifies him as a healer who could not heal his own wound – that’s the Saturn side. Chiron the mediator can see the whole picture. Turning to his intuitive higher mind he considers the alternatives. Suffer or sacrifice. Ironically, the only reason he is immortal is because his father is Kronos (Saturn). Also worth mentioning is that astronomically a centaur is an asteroid and also a comet – hence the designation half-horse, half man. His comet attributes could mean that he might suddenly disappear into outer space. For now, he is here to help us bridge the gap … right here I want to say that I think there is a new bridge to cross. Historically we have come to a similar place, known similar situations, events and characters such as we are seeing on the world stage today. It’s like a re-make of the same playbook, only we evolve a little more each time. I have listed some of this history below. When I refer to “the gap”, these days it could mean between 2 worlds, between dimensions or between timelines. Right now, Saturn is in a weakened position in Aries, while Uranus is quite comfortable in Gemini. The stage is set for a quantum leap. What holds you back from taking the leap into the Aquarian Age might be an old story of pain, betrayal or loss.
The house placement of your Chiron will usually reveal your extra set of antennae. There are many factors, i.e. sign and aspects that help describe your experience with hyper-awareness, pain and at the same time your mastery, sensitivity, accomplishments and inner knowings in this area of your life. Sometimes it is not linear (Saturn) or obvious, or even conscious. Interpreting Chiron in the charts is complex and deep, because his story has many aspects and details that involve problems and solutions. Many astrologers say that Chiron is the unhealed wound in your chart and also the key to your chart.
How does that wound become a badge of honor? This is not a quick fix. Sometimes our dark times and traumas never go away. Aspects and transits to Chiron in your life are opportunities to recognize yourself on a soul level. Pain can render you hyper-aware. The value system – what really matters can shift suddenly. Chiron represents a bag of tools, an initiation and a way forward. It is likely to be “that thing” that gets in the way, that you can’t fix, that keeps coming up.
What did Chiron not do? He did not choose to hurt others, flaunt his success, reject love or pout in the corner. With Saturn on one side and Uranus on the other, he accepted his appearance and his path. Finding himself on the outside, he went inside his own inner kingdom. This is the dark night when you ask “who am I? Why am I here? Did I sign up for this?” Saturn says, “well, yes, it says right here in the contract….” This is where you switch on that Uranus light bulb, clear out the shadows and start building your Chiron bridge between what is and what you can make of it. Many of my readers are counselors and therapists. I will leave the methodology to you.
Chiron Now:
On June 19, 2026, Chiron will leave Aries and move into Taurus. In September he will duck back into Aries for a final wrap-up, returning to Taurus in April 2027 and staying until 2034. Chiron was discovered November 1st, 1977. And so, one year from now, on June 8, 2027 Chiron will have completed one full orbit of the sun since we have been aware of his presence. That’s 50 earth years. People born in 1977 will be having their Chiron Return along with Chiron himself.
I remember 1977 as a pivotal time in my life. It would later become known as the period when alternative healing and holistic awareness were coming into focus. I remember reading The Seth Books and having sparks going off in my head. As I write this, Chiron is helping me remember the profound shift of focus from outward to inward. With Chiron in Aries, I was mistakenly pursuing my desire nature through the shadow side of Libra – being the pleaser. When Chiron moved into Taurus, and more to the point – became visible in the night sky, my focus became more grounded and practical. I began doing things that mattered to me and building self-esteem. Chiron in earth sign Taurus led me back to my innate values and the joys of art, beauty and gardening.
Chiron’s journey through Aries, since April 2018 has been a study of identity, courage, acting on desire, independence, spontaneous reaction, competition, leaders asserting hyperboles, too many chiefs, all things to do with the head and the face. Aries likes to be original, first, the initiator… Ruled by mars, Aries has to do with weapons and sharp objects, heroes and pioneers. In the past Chiron in Aries brought us Superman, the Cuckoos Nest, self-sufficiency, arrogance and dictators.
Chiron in Taurus: With all the other orbiting bodies in air and fire signs, Chiron will be the one to ground us in earth sign Taurus. Taurus is the body. Taurus makes things real – manifest. Ruled by Venus, the Taurus journey will include the intuitive arts, healing arts, art therapy, attention on food and food sensitivities, gardening as art. All things to do with the body beautiful might experience a revival or an upgrade. Dance, body art and adornment will be earthy and natural. Things like mud baths and clay facials will be popular. I would expect that medbeds will become commonplace. The feeling senses will be sharpened. You might hear, “I can feel it in my bones”. I know there are people who can feel the ley lines and underground water with their body. We may hear more about psychokenesis and telekenesis. Will our food get a healing? Our soil? Maybe even the planet!! With Taurus it’s all very personal and present. Venus is beautiful but pragmatic. A renewed love and reverence for our beautiful Earth is long overdue. Chiron can facilitate a makeover, but there is work involved.
Taurus is also about love, money and the value system. We have been expecting a new monetary system. With Chiron, it might appear more like a bridge between the old (Saturn) and the digital. Taurus rules banking, resources and food. Historically, The Federal Reserve Reform Act of 1977 made explicit the Federal Reserve’s objectives, increased its transparency and accountability to Congress. OK, that didn’t age well, but we might expect similar news headlines.
Taurus signifies self-worth and self-validation. Taurus can be territorial and jealous, stubborn and hoarding. Sometimes justified, it might be interesting to source out the cause of these behaviors. (extra toilet paper is not a bad thing) The specific part of the body is the throat, neck, vocal chords and the voice. This is not to be confused with the words or the message – that would be Gemini. Taurus is more about resonance, melodic tones and soothing sounds. Also self-worth is not to be confused with money or acquisitions. When we are talking about Chiron, healing and finding the key to your chart – the 2nd house, venus and Taurus are important factors in exploring the self and finding the ultimate fullness and richness of self love.
